“Croatia came to EURO2024 to achieve something memorable”, says Modrić ahead of Spain opener

Luka Modrić and coach Zlatko Dalić spoke to the press ahead of Croatia’s EURO 2024 opener at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. To escape the ‘Group of Death‘, as it has been dramatically called, Croatia must overcome holders Italy and one of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history, Spain – it is Spain who will be their first challenge tomorrow.

What did Luka Modrić say?

Modrić expressed excitement about the challenge ahead. “I don’t like to compare to the success of other generations. There is a good mix of experience and young players. They are very quick, especially on the wings. This Spain team is quality.”

The captain is very familiar with the global stage, having already participated in four World Cups and four Euros.“I am happy to be at another major tournament. I remember how amazing the atmosphere was at the Euros in 2016 and I hope it will be that way tomorrow and that we will give our fans a reason to celebrate.”

When asked if Croatia is still an underdog despite their recent successes, Modrić was unfazed. “I don’t really care if people consider us a favourite or not. We can only show what we can do with our game and our fighting spirit.”

“Our togetherness is our biggest strength. If we are the team we know we can be, we will get a good result.”

We have the right balance between experience and youth. The senior lads have to help the younger ones if needed, but they are top players. They don’t need much help.” Modrić also praised the return of Ivan Perišić, highlighting the positive impact of having experienced players in the team.

Addressing the challenge posed by 16-year-old Spanish talent Lamine Yamal, Modrić laughed about the two-decade age gap between them. “When I hear such things, I feel quite old (laughs). Age doesn’t matter, but rather what is demonstrated on the pitch. Lamine has shown some amazing things, he has tremendous potential and talent, and he has a great career ahead of him.”

At 38, Modrić said: “I feel very good mentally and physically. This is a very important tournament, and it is very difficult.

“Croatia came to EURO2024 to achieve something memorable, as we have already confirmed our place among the football elite. We are confident.”

Coach Zlatko Dalić echoed Modrić’s sentiments about the team’s cohesion and resilience. He highlighted the importance of having a solid and adaptable defence, especially against Spain’s dynamic attack. “Josko Gvardiol can stop any player and with the rest of his teammates he is ready to stop Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and the other Spanish players.”

Dalić also commented on the team’s tactical approach and the importance of being prepared for any opponent. “Whoever plays in defence, we are always ready and prepared. That’s what the manager and the staff do. They get us ready and prepared for whoever it is.

“I have the right to be an optimist and I am optimistic about my team. Everyone is healthy and will train tonight.”

As Croatia gears up for their opening match against Spain, the team’s focus, unity, and experience will be pivotal. With leaders like Modrić and the strategic guidance of Dalić, Croatia aims to navigate the challenges of their tough group and make a significant impact on the tournament.
