Germany hammered Scotland 5-1 in the opening match of Euro 2024, as the Scots faced a harsh reality check on the big stage. Here’s how both sets of players rated:
Germany
Manuel Neuer – 6
Rarely troubled as Germany dominated possession. Made a couple of routine saves but largely a spectator.
Joshua Kimmich – 8
Consistently drove forward and supported attacks. Effective in both defence and attack, ensuring Germany’s dominance on the right flank.
Antonio Rüdiger – 6
Marshalled the defence confidently. Ensured stability at the back, though largely untested by Scotland’s forwards. Points knocked off for sacrificing his team’s clean sheet with an own
Jonathan Tah – 7
Solid and dependable alongside Rudiger. Did well to stifle any rare Scottish advances.
Maximilian Mittelstädt – 8
Energetic performance down the left, supporting Wirtz and contributing to the attacking play. Delivered several dangerous crosses.
Robert Andrich – 6
Steady if unspectacular. Worked hard in midfield but overshadowed by his more illustrious teammates.
Toni Kroos – 8
Pulled the strings in midfield with his vision and precise passing. Showed he still has the quality to dictate play at the highest level.
İlkay Gündoğan – 8
Led by example as captain. Dominated the midfield battle, ensuring Germany controlled the game from start to finish.
Jamal Musiala – 8
A constant menace with his movement and dribbling. Kept Scotland’s defence on their toes and contributed significantly to Germany’s attacking fluidity.
Florian Wirtz – 8
Opened the scoring with a composed finish and was a creative force throughout. Continued his excellent club form on the international stage.
Kai Havertz – 8
Impressive performance, creating space and linking up play. Scored a penalty and was involved in most of Germany’s best attacking moments.
Substitutions:
Thomas Müller – 6
Brought on to maintain control and did so effectively. Kept the ball well but didn’t make a significant impact.
Leroy Sané – 6
Injected pace and directness but couldn’t find the net despite a couple of good chances.
Niclas Füllkrug – 7
Came off the bench to score Germany’s fourth. Proved to be a super sub with an immediate impact.
Pascal Groß – 7
Added energy and creativity after coming on. Unlucky not to score with a couple of decent efforts.
Emre Can – 7
Anchored the midfield well after coming on. Sealed the win with a late goal, capping off a solid cameo.

Angus Gunn – 4
Will be disappointed with the result. Conceded five and looked helpless for most of the game.
Anthony Ralston – 4
Struggled against Wirtz. Found it tough to cope with Germany’s fluid attacks and was caught out of position several times.
Jack Hendry – 4
Part of a disorganised defence. Struggled to contain Germany’s forwards and looked out of sorts.
Ryan Porteous – 3
Sent off for a reckless challenge. A night to forget for the young defender as he left his team in the lurch.
Kieran Tierney – 5
Tried to steady the ship but was part of a shell-shocked defence. Offered little going forward.
Andy Robertson – 5
Had a tough task against Musiala. Provided the cross for Scotland’s only goal but otherwise struggled.
Callum McGregor – 4
Overrun in midfield and criticised for his role in Germany’s second goal. Failed to influence the game.
John McGinn – 5
Usual energy and drive were missing. Couldn’t stamp his authority on the game.
Scott McTominay – 5
Returning from injury, he was part of a midfield that was outplayed. Limited impact on proceedings.
Ryan Christie – 5
Worked hard but to little effect. Spent much of the game chasing shadows.
Che Adams – 4
Starved of service and couldn’t get involved. Sacrificed at half-time after a frustrating first half.
Substitutions:
Grant Hanley – 5
Thrown into a tough situation and struggled to make an impact. Failed to prevent the fourth goal.
Billy Gilmour – 3
Brought on at 3-0 down and couldn’t change the game. His influence was missed from the start.
Kenny McLean – 3
Came on to try to stabilise the team but was ineffective. Offered little to stem the German tide.
Scott McKenna – 6
A late substitute who made a couple of good challenges. His presence contributed to an own goal, showing potential for a starting spot.
Lawrence Shankland – N/A
Introduced too late to make any impact with the game already decided.
