“I believe that we still have something to prove, and we’ll be stronger,” insisted Michał Probierz when he addressed the media at Volksparkstadion following Poland’s 2-1 loss to the Netherlands on Sunday.
Both sides had been ravaged by injury in the buildup to EURO2024, with Poland lacking Robert Lewandowski for their Group D opener while the Netherlands were forced to send Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners home.
While the scoreline looks to reflect a closely contended game, the Biało-czerwoni were dominated for the majority of the match and were remarkably lucky to have kept the Oranje level – until Wout Weghorst arrived on scene to smash home the winner.
Probierz hopes that Poland will be buoyed by the return of a striker of their own, suggesting that “Lewandowski is coming back to strength and he will hopefully play against Austria. He’s a very important player for us.”
“I would like to thank the fans, they’ve been here and they’ve been supporting us. You could have heard them inside the stadium, it’s a shame that we couldn’t score a goal for them in the last minutes of the match.”
“We are not giving up, we will do whatever we can to fight and qualify. I believe that we still have something to prove and we’ll be stronger,” he continued, going on to add that “we have shown that we can play very nice football, we just need to move on from this match. All of the players believe that we are moving in the right direction.”
“When it comes to Austria, we need to see how France plays against them next. We need to see how this match is developing and then you know, we haven’t said our last words yet. We’ll do whatever we can to play a wiser match against Austria. We just need to try to beat Austria and play well.”
