“We didn’t have enough intensity,” says Hjulmand after disappointing evening for Denmark

Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand spoke to the media after his team’s 1-1 draw with Slovenia at EURO2024. Hjulmand was frustrated about the result, but looked ahead to their next two games and reflected: “I’m more disappointed that we didn’t didn’t score the second goal.

“When you’re in front [by] 1-0, and you don’t score the second goal, something happens in you. So the 2-0 goal is so important, and it’s so important to go after the 2-0, because it decides the game somehow, but we were very close.”

When asked about the energy in his squad towards the of the game, Hjulmand said: “Of course, there has to be energy all the time, but that’s what happens in football games.

“Sometimes it changes, and of course, I have to make sure that I make the substitution when I see that some people are just lacking energy, but I feel that we did a good job. I think the lack of the second goal also has an influence on that.”

Christian Eriksen was a vital part of Denmark’s game today, making his first appearance at the European Championships since he suffered a cardiac arrest against Finland at the delayed EURO2020 tournament. Hjulmand was happy with his captain, expressing that the midfielder is “the heart of our game. He knows how to play. I’ve seen him. I know the critics have been that he’s not played so much in Manchester United, but this spring, he has played. He’s a great player, and he showed it today.”
