Player Ratings: McTominay shines as Scotland send it to final day

Scotland got their first point at EURO2024 after drawing 1-1 with Switzerland at Cologne Stadium in an entertaining game, keeping their dreams alive in the process.

Here’s FromTheSpot’s player ratings from the game:

Scotland

Angus Gunn – 8
Gunn had a good first half, making a brilliant save from an Ndoye shot to keep the game level. He then made another good save in the second half, keeping Ndoye out from close range again.

Kieran Tierney – 6
Tierney’s overall player tonight was good as he started in the back three. He helped control the backline for Scotland but a couple of mistakes meant he didn’t get a higher rating.

Grant Hanley – 6
The Norwich City man had a poor first half, and his misplaced pass led to Switzerland’s first goal. However, in the second half, Handley nearly scored the winning goal after he was found at the back post, but his headed effort hit the post.

Jack Hendry – 6
The 29-year-old was part of the back three tonight alongside Tierney and Hanley. He made three clearances and two recoveries and won 7 duels. It was a good performance from the defender.

Andy Robertson – 8
The captain was one of Scotland’s best players in the match; he played a big part in the first goal, bringing it out of the box and combining with Gilmour to set up the first goal. He carried this into the second half and pushed the team forward but it wasn’t enough for the win.

Callum McGregor – 6
The Celtic midfielder had a good game, setting up McTominay for his goal, which gave them the lead at the time. However, he struggled after the goal of getting involved with Scotland’s play going forward.

Billy Gilmour – 7
Coming into the starting 11 for tonight’s game, Gilmour was deployed into midfield. He had a good game, combined with the defence and attack well, and played a big part in the goal.

Anthony Ralston – 5
Ralston played on the right-hand side for Scotland tonight but was one of their less influential players.

Scott McTominay – 8
Scott McTominay played a brilliant game and was Scotland’s man of the match. He scored the opening goal and was influential in their play.

John McGinn – 8
Tonight, McGinn played like a man who wanted to help his nation win its first game at the tournament. He was strong going forward and resilient when defending against the Swiss.

Che Adams – 6
Adams was the lone striker tonight in the Scotland team, but found it difficult to get into the game. His pressing was good throughout the game and helped his team forward, but he couldn’t get involved with any of Scotland’s attacking moves.

Switerzland

Yann Sommer – 6
Sommer didn’t have to do much during the game, as Scotland didn’t test him. However, he pulled a magnificent save off in the second half to deny Steve Clarke’s men the winning goal.

Ricardo Rodriguez – 5
The 31-year-old had a difficult game and couldn’t stop Scotland’s attack while picking up a yellow card.

Manuel Akanji – 8
The Manchester City defender was one of the best players tonight. He made crucial interceptions to deny Scotland the winning goal and also helped his team going forward. He will be a big part of Switzerland’s success if they can make it far in the tournament.

Fabian Schär – 5
Playing in the back three, Schär had a difficult game. He deflected the ball from McTominay’s shot and found it hard to get into the game afterwards.

Michel Aebischer – 6
Aebischer was deployed on the wing for Switzerland tonight and performed well. He was good going forward and carried out his defence duties well.

Granit Xhaka – 8
Xhaka was the man of the match for tonight’s game. He was superb in all aspects of his game and helped Switzerland to a crucial point.

Remo Freuler – 6
Freuler, like Aebischer, performed well for the Swiss. He didn’t do anything special but was solid throughout the whole game.

Silvan Widmer – 6
Widmer was one of Switzerland’s less influential players and had a difficult night against Scotland.

Ruben Vargas – 6
Vargas played in the front three tonight and was good. He created three chances and had two shots, but couldn’t really get any clear cut chances to make a big difference in the match.

Dan Ndoye – 7
Ndoye was playing in the front three for Switzerland tonight and the striker had lots of opportunities to score throughout the whole game, but he just couldn’t convert his chances.

Xherdan Shaqiri – 8
Shaqiri was one of Switzerland’s best players after returning to the starting eleven after missing the first game. He scored a wonderful goal to get Switzerland back into the game, which he has been doing for the past decade. He will bring a big boost for Switzerland in their last group match.

Switzerland will face Germany in their last group stage game on the 23 June, whilst Scotland play Hungary on the same night in Stuttgart Arena.
