“I’m an absolute nightmare for opponents,” says Gordon ahead of Slovakia showdown

In a lively press conference at England’s training base in Blankenhain, Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon shared his thoughts and experiences as the team prepares for their crucial last-16 match against Slovakia in EURO2024. The 23-year-old, known for his speed and tenacity, offered insights into his journey, the team’s dynamics, and his own form and ambitions.

Gordon opened the session by addressing a recent incident that occurred during a recovery bike ride with his teammates. “[It was] meant to be a recovery bike ride and I was going down the hill and tried to take a picture for my family and before I knew it I was face first into the floor,” he recounted, adding humorously that “electric [bikes] are a lot faster than normal bikes – the front brake is on the left hand side and I tried to press the right one to slow down… and it didn’t slow down, it came to a full stop and I’ve gone ten feet in the air chin first!”

Despite the mishap, Gordon brushed off the minor injuries and continued the ride, underscoring his resilience and commitment.

On his role within the team, Gordon emphasised the unique qualities he brings to England’s starting eleven. “My strengths are I’m direct, I’m quick. I’m an absolute nightmare for anyone I play against. I’m always trying to put people on the back foot and I think I add a different element to the team,” he stated confidently.

Comparing his current experience at EURO2024 to his previous stint with the U21s, Gordon noted the higher level of competition. “Of course it’s a bit different, the competition is much higher. I mean we haven’t faced a bad nation yet. Every team you come up against are really good in their own right and that’s the main difference I have noticed,” he observed.

Addressing the criticism players face on social media, Gordon took a philosophical stance. “I don’t really care about stuff like that, I actually think of it in a positive way. If people are being negative, it’s only because they expect a lot from you. If we want that to stop, we need to perform and give people what they want to see,” he said.

On managing self-doubt, Gordon highlighted the universal nature of such feelings and the importance of addressing them. “Everything starts with doubt. Everyone naturally doubts themselves to begin with. I think the key is recognising that, then coming up with ways to manage it. It’s the best players who can be self-aware to know they are feeling that and change it during a game,” he suggested, offering a glimpse into his mental approach.

Looking ahead to facing his club teammate Martin Dubravka in the Slovakia match, Gordon expressed both respect and competitiveness. “He’s a top guy, I’ve played with him for a year and a half. He’s really important for Newcastle and he’s a top goalkeeper and I hope he loses,” he quipped.

Finally, Gordon discussed his current form and readiness for the match. “I’m very up to speed. Before the Iceland game I had an ankle injury which kept me out for the last week or two of the season but I had some time off for that to recover. From then on I’ve felt great in training. I’m in really good form, I’m training really well. I run a lot in training or a game so I get a lot of fitness,” he concluded.

As England gears up to face Slovakia, Gordon’s confidence and determination is clear. His unique skill set and unwavering focus will undoubtedly play a crucial role as England strive to advance further in EURO2024.
