Francesco Calzona warned that England could be “unbeatable” at EURO2024 if they click into gear, as his Slovakian side prepare to face the Three Lions in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday evening.
What did Francesco Calzona say?
“When England give great performances as a group they will be unbeatable,” said the 55-year-old Italian, who has been in charge of the Slovakian national team since 2022.
“We need to be careful because they have a top quality squad – for me, they the best squad at the EUROs because they have physicality, technique and creativity,” he explained, though Gareth Southgate’s squad selection has come under constant criticism from fans, with England failing to really get firing.
But Calzona knows that every player in the squad can cause problems, citing that “they left important players at home because they have so much quality to pick from.”
“We need to make the most of their weak points and concessions, but we also need to be cautious because this is a team that can punish you at any moment.”
What did Peter Pekarik say?
Peter Pekarik, a right-back who plays his club football in the German second tier for Hertha Berlin, admits that Slovakia must work to erase the mistakes they have made in previous matches.
“The mistakes we made in the previous games, we cannot make tomorrow because they will punish us,” he told reporters, stressing that “one slip up in the game, you can be punished so we need to be focused on ourselves.”
