Chelsea confirm signing of highly-rated French defender

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Montpellier’s Maelys Mpomé ahead of the 2024/25 Barclays Women’s Super League season. The defender has penned a contract until 2028.

Aged 21, Mpomé has featured regularly for Montpellier since signing in 2020, and her appearances have earned her consistent call-ups to the French youth squads.

Upon signing for Chelsea, Mpomé said: “I am really excited to be here. It’s just like living a dream to join such. big club. Now I just can’t wait to meet the team and start training.”

The club’s general manager, Paul Green, commented that “Maelys has good experience for her age and has developed well at Montpellier in the last few years.”

“She is a tall and athletic defender whose profile we believe will suit the WSL. We look forward to seeing her further develop and improve in the upcoming years.”

Chelsea’s Women’s Super League campaign gets underway on 20 September as they host Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow, with Sonia Bompastor taking the reigns following her summer switch from Olympique Lyonnais.
