Liverpool’s Sofie Lundgaard ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur and will undergo surgery, the club confirmed on Tuesday.
The midfielder joined the club in January 2023 and penned a contract extension just over two weeks ago, but will now be sidelined for the majority of the 2024/25 Barclays Women’s Super League season following her first-half substitution at Brisbane Road.
Dr Amelia Woodhouse, the club doctor, revealed that “Sofie’s can results confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, and she will be seeing the surgeon this week. She will now begin a period of rehabilitation with the support of everyone at the club.”

Liverpool’s Matt Beard noted: “We’re all devastated for Sofie. We have to rally around her because it’s going to be tough at times during the rehabilitation programme.”
“Sometimes these things happen in football and it can be so cruel. This is going to be a test of her character but I’m sure she will come back stronger from it with the support network she has here and the closeness of our group of players and staff.”
“It’s a blow for us because she’s had a really good pre-season and recently got herself into the team but the most important thing right now is making sure we’re all there for her and helping her in any way we can,” he added.
Lundgaard’s ACL injury brings the league’s tally to three for this season after just as many weeks of competition, with Everton’s Aurora Galli and Inma Gabarro also affected.
