Erik ten Hag sacked by Manchester United; van Nistelrooy to take interim role

Erik ten Hag has been sacked by Manchester United, as first reported by The Athletic on Monday morning. The Dutchman’s two-and-a-half-year tenure has come to a close, with Sunday’s defeat to West Ham United proving to be the final straw as pressure built at Old Trafford.

Standards have slumped at the club in recent years but their current position has become untenable, with Manchester United sitting 14th in the Premier League and having registered just three wins from their nine league fixtures in 2024/25.

In the interim, Ruud van Nistelrooy will be appointed to take charge of the team until a permanent replacement is found. The remainder of the club’s management staff remain in their roles for the time being.

The decision to relive ten Hag of his duties is one that has seemingly been pushed back countless times by the club’s hierarchy. Last season, United recorded their worst domestic finish since 1990 – but victory over Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup final resulted in a performance review and the triggering of a one-year contract extension.

In an official statement, the club added: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Manchester United will host Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before welcoming Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
