Brentford 0-2 Tottenham: Spurs end PL winless streak

Tottenham finally won in the Premier League as they beat Brentford 2-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Their last victory in the competition came on 15th December 2024 against Southampton.

Both sides started well, but Spurs took the lead in the 29th minute through a Vitaly Janelt own goal. The Bees looked for the equaliser and should have had one, but Pape Matar Sarr’s late goal saw the away side take all three points back to North London.

This win sees Ange Postecoglou’s team climb to 14th in the Premier League, two points behind Manchester United, with Brentford staying in 11th place.

As it happened

Brentford nearly took the lead within the first two minutes after breaking forward at pace. Mikkel Damsgaard was found on the edge of the box and got his shot away, but Archie Gray made a brilliant block to deny the Denmark international.

However, the away side responded instantly, with Djed Spence setting up Dejan Kulusevski inside the 18-yard box. His shot narrowly went wide of Brentford keeper Hákon Rafn Valdimarsson’s far post.

The game started to open up after, with both sides having a flurry of chances, but neither able to capitalise until the 29th minute when Spurs took the lead. Heung-Min Son’s corner was turned into the net by Brentford’s Vitaly Janelt in a bizarre goal for the away side.

Thomas Frank’s side looked to respond immediately with Christian Nørgaard and Bryan Mbeumo’s chances forcing Antonin Kinsky into smart saves, but the away side rode out the rest of the half with their lead intact.

Brentford looked to apply pressure immediately after the restart. A beautiful cross from Damsgaard found Yoane Wissa inside the six-yard box, but the number nine was unable to put it past Kinsky.

Neither side found a cutting edge, with Spurs’ Lucas Bergvall coming close to a second from the bench but firing wide of the post. Fabio Carvalho almost equalised for Brentford with five minutes remaining – he tried his luck with an overhead kick which Spence cleared off the line.

Spurs put the game out of sight two minutes later when Son released Sarr down the left and into the 18-yard box. The midfielder tucked his shot between the legs of Valdimarsson and put the away side 2-0 up.

Attention turns to the Carabao Cup semi-finals for Tottenham as they face Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday for a place in the final at Wembley. Brentford have a long break now until they face West Ham on Saturday 15th February in the Premier League.
