Transfer rumours “are lies,” insists Gavi amidst reports of Chelsea interest

Gavi has played down the credibility of a move away from Barcelona following the Catalan club’s 3-1 [4-1 agg] victory over Benfica on Tuesday night.

In recent days, the 20-year-old midfielder has been linked with a €60m [£50.5m] move to Chelsea by Fichajes, a reputable outlet in Spain – but Gavi insists there is nothing to support their claims. Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly interested in the youngster’s signature.

“People say things, they talk of offers here and there, but they are lies,” he revealed in the wake of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League win, which will see the Blaugrana face LOSC Lille or Borussia Dortmund for a place in the semi-finals.

Since breaking into the first team four years ago, the midfielder has been regarded by many as one of the sport’s most promising youngsters, as evidenced by his Kopa Trophy win in 2022.

But a serious knee injury forced him out of the squad last year, and under the leadership of Hansi Flick, Gavi has struggled to earn regular minutes since returning to full fitness.

“I signed a five year contract here, and I am going to see it out, because this is my boyhood club. [Squad] rotation happens, it’s okay and the coach trusts in me.”

The midfielder has a €1bn [£865m] release clause in his contract.
