Two goals from Robert Lewandowski during Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Girona in Sunday’s Derbi Català proved that, despite his age, the forward still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
The 36-year-old has just over a year left on his contract with Barça, but after another dominant performance that has stolen the headlines in Catalunya, he told reporters post-match that “I know I’m working as hard as always”.
“People are talking about my age,” he accepted, but the former Bayern Munich goalscorer insisted that he wants “to play at the top level for a few more years.”
“I feel very good physically. There’s no difference between a few years ago and now, in terms of my stats.”
His second goal against Girona was his 25th of the LaLiga season thus far, ensuring he remains two goals clear of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé in the race to secure Pichichi status. CA Osasuna’s Ante Budimir is third, with 15 goals to his name.
