“We continue to do the same thing,” insists Rúben Amorim after costly errors see United held to a draw in Lyon

A late goal from Rayan Cherki saw Manchester United held to a 2-2 draw in France against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal. Despite the result, manager Rúben Amorim felt his side were unlucky not to be taking a lead back to Old Trafford next week.

“We are really disappointed. We should have taken a one-goal advantage into the next game. We are improving game by game but we need to be more clinical. This is half-time, we have to think of the next one. We’ll give everything we have to get to the next stage,” said the head coach.

“I think we did well. In the first half, we had some difficulties trying to press the opponent because they play differently. In the second half, we adapted and controlled the game. I think we did well; we can do better.”

Two mistakes from Andre Onana cost the Red Devils dearly in the game, but Amorim didn’t want to focus on the individual errors.

“The important thing is to focus on the next game. When one player makes a mistake, all the team makes a mistake.”

“No, we continue to do the same thing – training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best XI to win every match.”

Leny Yoro scored his first goal for Manchester United tonight, and Amorim praised the defender’s performance.

“Leny Yoro… a top, top, top player. Trust me, he’s really good.”

“He’s really confident. He’s improving his physicality. We are seeing all the work that all the staff are doing with him. He feels at home in our club”.

Manchester United will host Lyon in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final next Thursday, with kickoff at Old Trafford scheduled for 20:00 BST [21:00 CEST].
