Spurs are still searching for their first Barclays Women’s Super League win since January after they failed to hold onto their comeback lead at Liverpool.

A left-footed strike down the centre of the goal by Sophie Roman Haug put Liverpool ahead in the 12th minute. Spurs continued to attack, and scored two quickfire goals to complete an unexpected comeback – an own goal by Rachael Laws in the 26th and a close-range effort by Clare Hunt in the 31st. However Liverpool equalised through Haug in the 51st minute and it would be the last goal of the game, leaving the spoils shared.

As it happened

After a strong Tottenham start with Beth England’s strike saved by Rachael Laws in the 10th minute, Liverpool swung the game in their favour. Spurs failed to clear the ball after a corner and Haug was able to bundle it home in the 12th minute.

But Tottenham’s continued pressure led to Jess Naz’s uncleared cross rebounding off Laws and into the back of her own net, levelling the scores in the 26th minute. Just five minutes later, Hunt got the final touch on Maite Oroz’s corner to put Tottenham ahead.

Liverpool emerged from halftime determined, though, and Haug headed home from a corner six minutes after the restart. The home side pressed relentlessly and looked much the bigger threat, but couldn’t find a winner.

Tottenham fought hard, coming back from a goal down to lead at halftime, but could not hold out and have now failed to win eight consecutive WSL games. Liverpool will take more positives away from this game, as their grit and determination meant they received a point in front of their home fans and are tightening their grip on a 5th-place finish.
