Liverpool’s Diogo Jota killed in car crash, Portuguese FA confirm

The 28-year-old was killed alongside his brother in a car crash on Thursday morning.

Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash in northern Spain, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has confirmed.

The 28-year-old was travelling along the A-52 motorway when the vehicle burst into flames. His brother, André Silva, was also killed in the incident.

Diogo was “much more than a fantastic player,” the FPF statement reads. “Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in the community itself.”

The FPF add that they have requested that UEFA observe a moment’s silence ahead of Portugal’s upcoming match against Spain at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

The Liverpool forward has three children with his wife, who he married less than two weeks ago.
