Manchester City are in the “final stages” of securing a January move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi, says Palace boss Oliver Glasner.
With Joško Gvardiol and Ruben Dias both picking up injuries in recent weeks, City’s hunt for a central defender has intensified and the England international has been identified as a good fit for Pep Guardiola’s system.
He captained Crystal Palace to their first major trophy as the Eagles beat Manchester City in May’s Emirates FA Cup final, before adding more silverware to the cabinet with a Community Shield triumph against Liverpool in August.
Guéhi, who was strongly linked with a £35m move to Liverpool last summer, is entering the final six months of his contract at Selhurst Park – and so the January transfer window represents the final chance for Palace to attract a transfer fee for the 25-year-old.
“He was 100% committed to the team”
Speaking in a press conference after confirming that he will step down at the end of the 2025/26 season, Glasner explained: “The deal with Marc is in the final stages. We can’t confirm, but it is not done [yet]. The result is Marc doesn’t play tomorrow [against Sunderland] for us.”
“When the players want to move on, a deal will happen. It looks like it has happened now.
“Everyone wanted Marc to stay forever. I talked to him, of course, it stays between us. Marc showed it in the summer transfer window, showed it the whole autumn that he was 100% committed to the team and to Crystal Palace,” Glasner continued.
“I wish him all the best for the rest of his career. He is still at the beginning of his great career. He is a fantastic guy.”
Guardiola has “nothing to say” about latest signing
It is shaping up to be an impactful January transfer window for Manchester City, who recently completed the £62m signing of Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo.
The Ghanaian has hit the ground running in Manchester, and while Pep Guardiola will be hoping that Guéhi does the same, he refused to be drawn on the status of City’s bid for the England international.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s Manchester Derby, the Spaniard insisted he had “nothing to say” about a move for the defender.
