Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Preston North End: Hillsborough hosts remain pointless

Sheffield Wednesday would look to record their first points of their 2023/24 EFL Championship campaign on Saturday, as they welcomed Preston North End to Hillsborough. The visitors defeated Sunderland last time out, and would look to build on that momentum in the Steel City.

SHW: Vásquez; Famewo, Diaby, Iorfa, Palmer; Diaby; Delgado, Bannan, Byers, Musaba; Gregory

PNE: Woodman; Hughes, Lindsay, Storey; Best, Ledson, Browne, Potts; Frøkjær-Jensen, Holmes; Keane

Potts created the first chance of the match at Hillsborough, spraying the ball out to the left flank before darting into the box to receive the cross – but his effort was palmed past the post by Vásquez.

Palmer was released down the right flank as the interval drew ever nearer though, launching a sensational ball into the box for Gregory. The chance was stolen from the striker at the last minute though, with the Hillsborough action remaining goalless for a while longer.

A sensational start to the second half saw Preston North End take the lead. Awaiting at the far post, Lindsay worked himself into space and blasted a powerful headed effort past Vásquez following a free-kick delivery.

A deflected free-kick from Browne saw PNE denied a second goal, while Gregory fired his attempt at an equaliser over the crossbar after receiving Palmer’s cross from the right flank. The Owls grew increasingly desperate in their search for an equaliser, but were ultimately forced to suffer another draw as Delgado’s tame header was held comfortably by Woodman.

Sheffield Wednesday will travel to Cardiff City on Saturday, with the Bluebirds also struggling thus far this season. Preston North End will welcome Swansea City to Deepdale as they look to build on a positive start to the campaign.
