SC Freiburg 1-2 West Ham United: Aguerd heads home to seal three points for the Hammers

Following on from Saturday’s win against Sheffield United, David Moyes’ West Ham United side travelled to Germany – where they’d face SC Freiburg on Thursday.

SCF: Atubolu; Kübler, Lienhart, Ginter, Sildilia; Grifo, Höfler, Eggestein, Sallai; Höler, Adamu

WHU: Fabianski; Kehrer, Agiert, Mavropanos, Coufal; Ward-Prowse, Álvarez; Fornals, Paquetá, Kudus; Bowen

Merely eight minutes had passed in Germany when Lucas Paquetá fired the Hammers into the lead, putting David Moyes’ side on course for victory as he leapt highest to latch onto Jarrod Bowen’s cross.

But despite SC Freiburg being limited to just one shot on target throughout the first half, the German hosts brought themselves level at the start of the second half through Roland Sallai’s close-range effort.

Lucas Höler should have fired Freiburg into the lead when he propelled his chance over the crossbar from six yards out, and it was a wasted opportunity that would come back to bite the hosts when Nayef Aguerd rose highest to meet James Ward-Prowse’s corner delivery and slam home the winner.
