Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Bristol City: Vilahamn’s Lilywhites hand Bristol City second successive defeat

Following an impressive performance at Stamford Bridge last weekend, Robert Vilahamn’s Tottenham Hotspur would host Bristol City on Sunday – with their newly-promoted opposition having fallen to a dismal opening day defeat against Leicester City last time out.

Spurs saw their lead doubled just four minutes later, with Martha Thomas doing well to latch onto Kaylan Marckese’s woeful clearance – using her back to send the ball back over the line for her second goal in as many games.

Impressively, the hosts would add a third goal before halftime through Eveliina Summanen on the stroke of half-time – as the midfielder curled a free-kick into the top corner to put any remaining hope of a comeback out of reach for Bristol City.

But Lauren Smith’s side did improve throughout the second half, reducing the deficit through Amalie Thestrup from the penalty spot after Summanen was judged to have handled the ball inside the area.

Yet that would be nothing more than a consolation for the visitors, who fall to their second successive defeat since returning to the Barclays Women’s Super League. Bristol City travel to Manchester City’s Joie Stadium next weekend, while Tottenham Hotspur travel to Brighton’s American Express Community Stadium.
