Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Newcastle United: Mbappé nets controversial late penalty in Paris

Paris Saint-Germain’s Parc des Princes would play host to an enthralling UEFA Champions League encounter on Tuesday, as a weakened Newcastle United side looked to keep their hopes of qualification alive in the French capital.

PSG: Donnarumma; Hernández, Pereira, Skriniar, Hakimi; Lee, Ugarte, Ruiz; Mbappé, Kolo Muani, Dembélé

NEW: Pope; Livramento, Schär, Lascelles, Trippier; Joelinton, Guimarães, Miley; Gordon, Isak, Almirón

Despite being forced to name a weak travelling squad that featured two goalkeepers and four teenagers on the bench, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United stunned their Parisian hosts after 24 minutes on Tuesday when Aleksander Isak powered home to open the scoring.

Against a side of PSG’s quality, Newcastle then understandably defended deep – keeping a buoyant attacking trio at bay, with Nick Pope doing well to deny Bradley Barcola and Kylian Mbappé throughout the second half.

But the hosts were awarded a penalty in controversial fashion deep inside stoppage time, when Ousmane Dembélé’s cross struck Tino Livramento’s chest before bobbling onto his arm.

As advised by VAR, Szymon Marciniak consulted the pitchside monitor before awarding the penalty, allowing Mbappé to step up to the spot and rescue a point at the death for PSG.

With Borussia Dortmund having already qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, it’s PSG that sit in second – and Newcastle United sit two points behind them. If the Magpies are to qualify, they’ll need to topple AC Milan and hope that PSG fail to beat Dortmund.
