Who did your EFL Championship club sign on Deadline Day?

Transfer deadline day in the EFL Championship saw some of the league’s most talented players make big moves to the Premier League. But there weren’t just outgoings for Championship clubs though, as a series of exciting players were loaned into the league.

If Deadline Day was a little too hectic for your liking, here is a rundown of each Championship team’s transfer activity on February 1st until the window shut at 23:00.

Birmingham City

IN: Alex Pritchard from Sunderland (Undisclosed)

OUT: Josh Andrews to Gillingham (Undisclosed)

Blues manager Tony Mowbray bought in experienced midfielder Alex Pritchard from his former club Sunderland. The 30-year-old can play in a variety of positions and is seasoned at this level having played over 150 Championship games.

Academy graduate Josh Andrews was on loan at Accrington Stanley for the first half of the season, but joined fellow League Two club Gillingham for the rest of the season.

Blackburn Rovers

IN: Billy Koumetio from Liverpool (Loan), Duncan McGuire from Orlando City (Loan), John Fleck from Sheffield United (Free)

OUT: Tom Bloxham to Harrogate Town (Loan), Niall Ennis to Stoke City (Undisclosed), Adam Wharton to Crystal Palace (£18m initial fee, potentially rising to £22m)

Academy wonderkid Adam Wharton has made the step up to the Premier League at just 19 years of age. Crystal Palace once again dipped into the Championship market to sign the midfielder for an initial £18m.

Tom Bloxham and Niall Ennis also left the club on deadline day, the latter of whom made a permanent move to league rivals Stoke City.

Rovers looked to remedy their losses by signing two players with international caps to their name in Duncan McGuire and John Fleck. France U20 international defender Billy Koumetio joined on loan also.

Bristol City

IN: Adedire Mebude from KVC Westerlo (Loan), Max Bird from Derby County (Undisclosed)

OUT: Max Bird to Derby County (Loan)

Adedire Mebude was only able to appear in three matches so far for Belgian top flight side KVC Westerlo. The winger joined the Robins on loan in search of more game time.

Midfielder Max Bird was signed permanently from Derby County, but he has been loaned back to the club where he made his professional debut for the remainder of the season.

Cardiff City

IN: Josh Wilson-Esbrand from Manchester City (Loan), Ethan Horvath from Nottingham Forest (Undisclosed), David Turnbull from Celtic (Undisclosed)

OUT: Andy Rinhomhota to Rotherham United (Loan)

The Bluebirds made the permanent signings of two internationally capped players: David Turnbull from Scottish champions Celtic, and Ethan Horvath from Nottingham Forest. The American goalkeeper played all 120 minutes in Luton Town’s playoff final victory last season.

Josh Wilson-Esbrand was on loan to losing playoff finalists Coventry City last season, and returned to the division after spending the first half of it on loan to Reims in France.

Zimbabwe international Andy Rinhomhota was loaned to last-placed Rotherham United after struggling for first team minutes this term.

Coventry City

IN: Ephron Mason-Clark from Peterborough United (Undisclosed)

OUT: Ephron Mason-Clark to Peterborough United (Loan)

Dynamic 24-year-old winger Ephron Mason-Clark was signed permanently from Peterborough United and loaned back to the club for the rest of the season. Mason-Clark has already scored ten goals and provided five assists in League One this season.

Huddersfield Town

IN: N/A

OUT: Mustapha Olagunju to Crawley Town (Loan)

A quiet deadline day for Huddersfield Town. The Terriers made only one transaction, sending 22-year-old defender Mustapha Olagunju on loan to League Two side Crawley Town.

Hull City

IN: Abdulkadir Omur from Trabzonspor (Undisclosed), Anass Zaroury from Burnley (Loan)

OUT: Dogukan Sinik to Hatayspor (Loan), Thimothee Lo-Tutala to Doncaster Rovers (Loan), Ryan Woods to Exeter (Loan), Harry Vaughan to Bristol Rovers (Loan)

Lots of changes to the playing squad at The MKM Stadium on deadline day. The Tigers further added to their spectacular transfer window by signing 12-capped Turkish international midfielder Abdulkadir Omur from Trabzonspor.

Anass Zaroury looked promising in the Championship last season, scoring six goals, and assisting six. The winger, who played at the 2022 FIFA World Cup for Morocco, joined on loan for the rest of the season.

Dogukan Sinik made the loan move back to his native country Turkey. Thimothee Lo-Tutala, Ryan Woods, and Harry Vaughan all made loan moves to EFL teams.

Ipswich Town

IN: Kieffer Moore from Bournemouth (Loan)

OUT: Elkan Baggott to Bristol Rovers (Loan)

High-flying Ipswich Town signed giant Welsh international striker Kieffer Moore on loan from Premier League club Bournemouth. The 31-year-old has scored 12 international goals and has played in over 150 Championship matches.

Young Indonesian defender Elkan Baggott has not played a single minute of second tier football this season and has been loaned out to Bristol Rovers in the league below.

Leeds United

IN: Connor Roberts from Burnley (Loan)

OUT: Ian Poveda to Sheffield Wednesday (Loan), Sean McGurk to Swindon Town (Free)

Burnley defender Connor Roberts became the fourth Welsh international in the Leeds United squad after joining on loan. The Swansea City academy product is hugely experienced at this level having played in over 150 Championship games.

Colombian international winger Ian Poveda has moved across Yorkshire to Sheffield Wednesday on loan in search of more minutes. Young winger Sean McGurk has left the club permanently, joining Swindon Town for free.

Leicester City

OUT: N/A

No action to report this deadline day from the team sitting top of the league table, with the deal for Stefano Sensi collapsing as the deadline approached.

Middlesbrough

IN: N/A

OUT: Calum Kavanagh to Bradford City (Undisclosed), Morgan Rogers to Aston Villa (£8m initial fee, potentially rising to £15m)

Promising 21-year-old winger Morgan Rogers has returned to his home county of West Midlands to join European hopefuls Aston Villa for an initial £8 million fee.

Irish youth striker Calum Kavanagh also left the club in a permanent deal, signing for League Two side Bradford City.

Millwall

All quiet in Bermondsey as Millwall made no deadline day transactions.

Norwich City

IN: Sydney van Hooijdonk from Bologna (Loan)

OUT: Przemyslaw Placheta to Swansea City (Free), Jon McCracken to Dundee United (Loan), Adam Idah to Celtic (Loan)

Sydney van Hooijdonk, son of former Nottingham Forest and Celtic player Pierre van Hooijdonk, joined the East Anglian club from Serie A surprise package Bologna.

Polish winger Przemyslaw Placheta was part of the Norwich City team that won the Championship in the 2020-21 season. He joined Swansea City on a free transfer.

Jon McCracken and Adam Idah were both sent on loan north of the border, to Dundee United and Celtic respectively.

Plymouth Argyle

IN: Lino Sousa from Aston Villa (Loan)

OUT: Saxon Earley to Wycombe Wanderers (Loan)

Argyle made only one signing on deadline day, bringing in 19-year-old defender Lino Sousa on loan from Aston Villa.

The Pilgrims also sent a player out on loan, as young defender Saxon Earley joined League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

Preston North End

No deadline day action was to be had at Deepdale.

Queens Park Rangers

IN: Isaac Hayden from Newcastle United (Loan), Joe Hodge from Wolverhampton Wanderers (Loan)

The Rs bolstered their playing squad as they try to stay in the Championship by bringing in two players on loan from the Premier League.

Midfielder Isaac Hayden comes with a wealth of Premier League experience, having played in over 100 matches.  21-year-old midfielder Joe Hodge, formerly of Manchester City Academy, joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Rotherham United 

IN: Andy Rinhomhota from Cardiff City (Loan), Charlie Wyke from Wigan Athletic (Loan), Femi Seriki from Sheffield United (Loan)

OUT: Georgie Kelly to Carlisle (Undisclosed)

The Millers dipped into the loan market to try and get themselves off the foot of the Championship table. 

Experienced players Charlie Wyke and Andy Rinhomhota joined from Sunderland and Cardiff respectively – they have over 400 EFL appearances between them.

At the other end of the experience scale, young defender Femi Seriki joined from Premier League side Sheffield United in search of more minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday

IN: Ian Poveda from Leeds United (Loan), Kristian Pedersen from Swansea City (Loan)

OUT: George Byers to Blackpool (Loan)

Danish defender Kristian Pedersen has played over 150 Championship games and will add quality to the Owls‘ backline. Colombian winger Ian Poveda made the trip across Yorkshire from Leeds United to join on loan also.

Former Scotland U17 international midfielder George Byers has fallen out of favor at Hillsborough. He dropped down to League One to join Blackpool on loan.

Southampton

The Saints already have a squad bursting with talent, and there was no need for them to bring in anyone on deadline day.

Stoke City

IN: Million Manhoef from Vitesse Arnhem (Undisclosed), Niall Ennis from Blackburn Rovers (Undisclosed)

OUT: Emre Tezgel to MK Dons (Loan)

The fantastically named Million Manhoef joined on a permanent deal from Dutch team Vitesse Arnhem. The young winger has scored four Eredivisie goals this season. Niall Ennis also joined on a permanent deal from fellow Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Academy graduate Emre Tezgel has not made a senior appearance for the Potters this term. The 18-year-old forward joined League Two team MK Dons on loan.

Sunderland

IN: Romaine Mundle from Standard Liege (Undisclosed), Callum Styles from Barnsley (Loan)

OUT: Alex Pritchard to Birmingham City (Undisclosed), Jay Matete to Oxford United (Loan), Nectarios Triantis to Hibernian (Loan), Eliezer Mayenda to Hibernian (Loan)

Sunderland were very busy on deadline day, bringing in two players and sending out four.

Talented young winger Romaine Mundle joined permanently from Belgian side Standard Liege. He was joined by the arrival on loan of Callum Styles from Barnsley. Despite being only 23-years-of-age, the Hungarian international has over 100 Championship appearances.

After playing 115 times for Sunderland, Alex Pritchard was sold to league rivals Birmingham City.

A trio of young talents were sent out on loan; Nectarios Triantis and Eliezer Mayenda to Hibernian, and Jay Matete to Oxford United.

Swansea City

IN: Charles Sagoe Jr from Arsenal (Loan), Przemyslaw Placheta from Norwich City (Free)

OUT: Kristian Pedersen to Sheffield Wednesday (Loan)

Swansea City targeted wingers this deadline day. 19-year-old Charles Sagoe Jr joined on loan from Arsenal, and Polish international Przemyslaw Placheta joined on a free from Norwich City.

After signing on a free transfer from German club 1.FC Köln in the summer, Kristian Pedersen departed on loan to Sheffield Wednesday after making just four Championship appearances for the Swans.

Watford

IN: Giorgi Chakvetadze from KAA Gent (Undisclosed)

OUT: Jorge Cabezas to Gillingham (Loan)

Versatile midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze signed on a permanent deal from Belgian Jupiler Pro League side KAA Gent after an initial loan deal. Chakvetadze has 22 international caps for Georgia.

Promising Colombian striker Jorge Cabezas has moved to Gillingham on loan.

West Bromwich Albion

IN: Mikey Johnston from Celtic (Loan)

OUT: Caleb Taylor to Bolton Wanderers (Loan)

Five-time Scottish Champion Mikey Johnston has joined from Celtic on loan. The Ireland international winger has appeared in over 50 Scottish Premiership matches and 25 Liga Portugal matches.

Young academy graduate defender Caleb Taylor has moved to a Bolton Wanderers side hopeful of promotion to the Championship.
