Leila Ouahabi makes Catalunya squad ahead of first fixture since 2019

Manchester City’s Leila Ouahabi is set to be included in the Catalunya squad ahead of their friendly fixture against Paraguay this weekend, according to the club.

The Federació Catalana de Futbol (FCF) will announce the full squad list at 11am BST on Wednesday, but Ouahabi’s inclusion could hint at a number of other Catalonian players swapping la Roja for les Segadores – especially given the discontent that remains following Luis Rubiales’ antics after the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final.

Ouahabi was notably one of the fifteen players that made themselves unavailable for Spanish selection in September 2022, and one of a dozen that continued with that stance ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Catalunya are only able to play friendly fixtures, due to not being officially recognised by either FIFA or UEFA – hence why Ouahabi is able to represent les Segadores this weekend. She has previously earned three caps with the FCF, in addition to 49 caps with the Spanish national team.

A number of other high-profile names have represented Catalunya in the past, including Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Ona Batlle and Marta Torrejón. Brighton’s Vicky Losada previously captained the side.
