Liverpool 3-1 Sheffield United: Reds return to Premier League summit

Liverpool survived a second-half scare at Anfield, as Alexis Mac Allister netted a stunning goal to guide the hosts to victory – and the top of the Premier League table – after Sheffield United had restored parity just before the hour mark.

As it happened

Thursday’s match on Merseyside was by no means a classic. While Liverpool surged into the lead shortly after the quarter-hour mark, they were gifted the opportunity as Ivo Grbić’s clearance was pounced upon by the onrushing Darwin Núñez.

But fortuitous circumstances would too benefit the Blades in the second half, with Gustavo Hamer’s headed effort taking a sizeable deflection off Conor Bradley before trickling past Caoimhin Kelleher to level the affair.

With less than fifteen minutes of regulation time remaining, Alexis Mac Allister would salvage a win for Jürgen Klopp’s side – ensuring they would provisionally return to the top of the Premier League table, if they could hold on and see the result out. The Argentinian nestled a stunning long-range effort into the top corner.

Cody Gakpo turned home in the 90th minute to seal the result for the Reds, who leapfrog Arsenal to claim the top spot ahead of the weekend’s action.
