Newcastle United 4-0 Tottenham: Lilywhites crumble in repeat of last season’s Tyneside horror

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur were comprehensively defeated by Newcastle United on Saturday, slumping to a 4-0 defeat on Tyneside. The loss comes just short of twelve months after they were dismantled 6-1 on the same turf last season, with the now departed Harry Kane netting Spurs’ only goal on that occasion.

As he did in that fixture, Alexander Isak netted twice for the Magpies on Saturday. Eddie Howe’s side completed their rout with further goals from Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schär, rising above Manchester United to claim sixth place in the Premier League for the time being.

As it happened

The lunchtime clash on Tyneside is not one that Micky van de Ven will be in any rush to watch back. A pair of calamitous mistakes from the defender allowed Alexander Isak to cut inside and pick out the bottom corner with a fierce effort, before granting Anthony Gordon space to double the lead just two minutes later.

Isak wanted more though, and less than ten minutes into the second half, the Swedish forward made a darting run from inside his own half, completing his brace as he slotted past Guglielmo Vicario.

But the Scandinavian wouldn’t be able to complete his hat-trick, with the fourth goal coming courtesy of a Fabian Schär header from a Gordon corner in the dying minutes of the match.

Three points move Newcastle United ahead of Manchester United, while Spurs drop out of the UEFA Champions League places on goal difference. Ange Postecoglou’s side would be left to rue their squandered opportunities, with Timo Werner twice missing chances to bring the Lilywhites back into contention.
