Charges dropped against Mason Greenwood

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped today, Thursday 2 February. The 21-year-old forward had been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault against his partner.

Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, the Head of Public Protection at Greater Manchester Police, said in a statement that “given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this.”

Greenwood joined United at age six, and burst onto the Premier League scene after impressing in the academy. His last game for the club came on January 22, 2022 – before being arrested on January 30th after allegations surfaced on social media. His club contract and sponsorship deals with Nike were suspended immediately.

Today’s news opens up the doors for Greenwood to make a return to Old Trafford – but having not played professional football for over a year, will Erik Ten Hag find space for the forward? United are enjoying a fine run of form, and the squad harmony seems to have improved since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. It’s hard to see Ten Hag wanting to risk ruining that by allowing Greenwood back into the squad.
