Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal: Gunners continue to dream of Premier League glory

Leandro Trossard’s 21st-minute goal assisted Arsenal in taking the 2023/24 Premier League title race with reigning champions Manchester City to the final day of the season, after a 1-0 away day success over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

As it happened

Knowing only a victory in each of their remaining two matches this season would give the Gunners any chance of dethroning reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, Mikel Arteta’s side flew out of the traps as André Onana brilliantly denied Buyako Saka after only four minutes.

Gabriel then headed inches over the crossbar before Leandro Trossard broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 21st minute as the talismanic Belgian attacker converted Kai Havertz’s cross from the byline from close-range for his 12th league goal this season.

Without the injured duo of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, United frustratingly concluded the first half without a shot on target but arguably should have had a penalty after Thomas Partey’s grounded leg caught Amad Diallo, however, VAR nonchalantly dismissed any appeals.

On course for a first seasonal league double in 17 years, title-chasing Arsenal had the first shot in anger following the restart as captain Martin Ødegaard fired a fierce shot straight at Onana before Casemiro produced a carbon copy for the first task David Raya had to deal with on a so-far disappointing afternoon for the hosts.

Substitute Gabriel Martinelli and then Declan Rice forced visibly-stunning acrobatic one-handed saves from Onana in front of the cameras with time elapsing, as in a second half without a significant number of goalmouth action, Arsenal remained in pole position to turn the Theatre of Dreams into United’s nightmare.
