PREVIEW: Newcastle United and Athletic Club look for back-to-back Champions League wins

The Magpies could win a third European match in a row with victory over the Basque giants.

Newcastle United return to Champions League action as they prepare to welcome Atletico Club to St. James’ Park.

The Magpies return to European football on the back of a 3-1 loss against West Ham United in the Premier League at the weekend.

Eddie Howe’s side have struggled with consistency domestically and have won only three of their last five games in all competitions.

Those wins came over Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, Fulham, and Jose Mourinho’s Benfica in the Champions League.

Newcastle sit 13th in the Premier League as they have won three, drawn three and lost four of their opening 10 fixtures this season.

Meanwhile, in the Champions League, the Magpies are aiming for a third consecutive win and are eighth in the table.

Last time Newcastle United reached the last-16 of the Champions League was in 2002/03, and since then they have never played a knockout match in the competition. That could change under the new format.

Newcastle have avoided defeat in 29 of their last 33 European home matches and have a good goal difference in the Champions League.

Howe will be without three players entering the match: Yoane Wissa, Tino Livramento and Harrison Ashby will not be available due to injuries.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club travel to Newcastle on the back of a 3-2 loss against Basque rivals Real Sociedad in LaLiga.

Los Leones have only won two of their last five games in LaLiga and sit in 11th place with 14 points.

In the Champions League, they have lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund with their only win against Qarabağ, in the form of a 3-1 victory at San Mamés.

This will be the second time the two sides have met and only the first officially after Newcastle won 2-1 in a friendly in 2022.

Ernesto Valverde will be without five players for the clash against Newcastle United: Iñaki Williams, Beñat Prados, Unai Egiluz, Iñigo Lekue and Maroan Sannadi are all injured.

The match will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 2 in the UK with a kickoff time of 8pm GMT.
