Manchester United 1-1 West Ham: Late Magassa strike rescues point for Hammers

The Red Devils have now won only one of their last six games against the Hammers.

Manchester United were made to share the spoils at Old Trafford as Soungoutou Magassa scored his maiden West Ham goal in the final 10 minutes of regular time.

Diogo Dalot’s effort was cancelled out by the visitors late in the second half which saw United slip back into eighth in the Premier League table.

Ruben Amorim’s men had threatened to breach the top five, but couldn’t capitalise on rivals Chelsea, Brighton, Liverpool and Sunderland dropping points.

The point was a much needed one for the Hammers, keeping them within arms’ reach of Leeds United in 17th.

As it happened

Manchester United had most of the possession in the first half and more shots to boot, with chances from Joshua Zirkzee and Bruno Fernandes late in the half notable missed opportunities.

Fernandes’ shot in the 28th minute hit the post after the ball fell to his feet on a rebound, before a chance from Bryan Mbeumo was tipped over the bar by Alphonse Areola.

United were an attacking threat before the first half ended but couldn’t penetrate West Ham’s stout defence.

Amorim’s men were first to strike in the second half as Casemiro’s shot from outside the box found the feet of Dalot, who slotted his finish into the bottom corner.

It was the Portuguese international’s first Manchester United goal in 18 months.

The hosts continued to dominate possession in the second half and kept pressing to search for a second goal. Chances from Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha could have seen them double their lead, but Areola was equal to them.

It was rather against the run of play, then, when West Ham caught Manchester United out from a set piece with less than 10 minutes of football left to play.

Substitute Andy Irving’s delivery pinballed around the box before Magassa found himself in the right place at the right time to smash a finish into the bottom corner and restore parity.

Fernandes could have earned United a late winner in ‘Fergie time’, but he blasted the ball miles over the bar in the last chance of the match before the final whistle.

The draw means Manchester United have only won one of their last six Premier League games against West Ham, and are winless in the last three matches.

This is their longest winless streak against the Hammers in the competition since a four-game run between February 2015 and November 2016.

Up next for Manchester United is a visit to Molineux on Monday evening to face a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers side who sit bottom of the table in the relegation zone.

For West Ham, it’s a visit to the Amex Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face Brighton.
