Irish attacker Armstrong Oko-Flex has been recalled by West Ham following a loan at Swansea City; the Hammers confirmed the move in a club statement, in which no reason for the recall was cited. Oko-Flex is the third West Ham academy product to be recalled this week, alongside Dan Chesters and Thierry Nevers.
Perhaps a lack of playing time was the reason for the Irishman’s departure – he played only 297 minutes over 13 games, starting just once. Other Swansea loanees, including Luke Cundle and Matthew Sorinola have both played significantly more for the squad. The 20-year-old failed to stand out, but Swans fans could see flashes of potential in his limited game-time.
With West Ham performing poorly in the Premier League this season – despite making the Europa Conference League knockout stages – Oko-Flex may be given a chance in the first-team. I think what’s most likely for the young attacker will be another loan move away to the EFL.
Morgan Whittaker has been recalled by Swansea, possibly to replace the departing Oko-Flex. Whittaker was absolutely flying for Plymouth, who are currently top of League 1 and primed for promotion. The attacker is Argyle’s top scorer and assist maker so far with an impressive 0.83 goals + assists per 90 minutes.
Despite rumors that the Swans were looking to cash in on Whittaker’s standout half-season, boss Russell Martin claims that the recalled loanee will have a part to play. Although not short of goals this season (scoring 36, 5th most in the Championship), Swansea could do with another forward, especially due to Paterson’s lack of form, Oko-Flex’s recall, and Obafemi falling out of favor.
My best guess is that Whittaker will stay with the squad and see some healthy game time – could this be his breakout period for the Welsh club?
