Macclesfield FC crowned league champions

Macclesfield FC have been crowned champions of the Pitching In Northern Premier League West Division.

With the Silkmen winning 3-1 at home against Trafford FC after goals from Dan Sweeney, Alex Curran and Neil Kengni there was an anxious wait inside the Leasing.com stadium as fans looked at their phones waiting for the Leek Town result who were away at Clitheroe.

Silkmen fans were made aware of the score early into the second half as Clitheroe took the lead five minutes into the second half. With five minutes left to play at Macclesfield, the home fans were in full voice with the chants of ‘Champions’ ringing around the ground.

The hosts held on for victory meaning the Silkmen were crowned champions. It is back-to-back tittles for Macclesfield, after they won the Northern Premier League last season.

It means if Leek were to win all of thier remaining four games they would finish on 79 points. The Silkmen still have four league games left to play this season with two at home and two away from home.

Ahead of the game, ticket prices and season ticket prices overshadowed the game as Macclesfield announcing an increase ahead of next season.

Director of Football Robbie Savage said in his column for The Mirror: “Following the massive rise in energy costs, our combined gas and electricity bills have gone up from £4,000 a month to £20,000 a month.”

It is their penultimate home game of the season next as they host City of Liverpool at the Leasing.com Stadium this Saturday.
