Having left Reading to join Chelsea in 2015, Fran Kirby has extended her stay at Kingsmeadow by an additional year. The forward has featured 175 times for Emma Hayes’ side, netting 110 goals to cement her place as the club’s all-time leading women’s goalscorer. She’s also made 65 appearances for the England national team.
Things haven’t gone to plan for Kirby this season though, as she confirmed that she’s set to miss out on the upcoming Women’s World Cup after sustaining a knee injury in February. That’ll come as a huge blow to Sarina Wiegman’s side – the forward played an instrumental role in last summer’s EURO success.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the club described Kirby as ‘one of the most renowned footballers across the globe, known for being technically gifted and clinical in front of goal.’ They went on to add that she has been ‘has been influential in our success’ and has ‘enjoyed a trophy-laden career’.
