Brentford sign Freiburg’s Flekken

Brentford have signed Mark Flekken from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, for a fee reportedly in the region of £11m. With David Raya set to move on to pastures new this summer, a replacement goalkeeper was the top priority for Thomas Frank’s side heading into the transfer window – and it appears that they’ve found their man.

The four-year deal remains subject to international clearance and a work permit, but Brentford fans can look forward to watching a ‘keeper who has only missed two games across the last two seasons. Additionally, he has made four appearances for the Netherlands since making his debut in March 2022.

Mark will fit very well with our style of play. His strengths on the pitch are his quality on the ball, his agility as a shot-stopper, and his space awareness as a sweeper keeper and in defending crosses.

Flekken guided Freiburg to an astonishing fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga this season, keeping a whopping thirteen clean sheets to claim the Golden Glove award. In his first interview as a Brentford player, the Dutchman revealed that he still can’t quite believe that he’s playing in the English top-flight, adding that ‘if you had told me seven years ago when I was in the third division of Germany that, one day, I would be playing in the Premier League, I would have probably knocked you down!
