Villa sign Alex Moreno from Real Betis

Aston Villa confirmed on Wednesday that they have completed the signing of Alex Moreno from Real Betis, with the transfer fee coming in at £13.2m. The 29-year-old is Unai Emery’s first signing since arriving at Villa Park, and he expressed his excitement at the transfer when speaking to the club.

“He has been one of the top left-backs in La Liga over the past few seasons and we are delighted to have him here.”

Moreno was linked with a move to Villa’s Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest in the summer, but that move fell through and the Spanish left-back stayed at the club he joined in 2019. He has started all but one of Real Betis’ LaLiga fixtures so far this season, bringing his total number of appearances for the side to 122.

The Spaniard will wear the number 15 shirt, and provide tough competition for Lucas Digne in the left-back role. As with most international transfers, Alex Moreno’s move is subject to a work permit and visa application. It is believed that Real Betis are interested in Leeds United’s Junior Firpo – who made 38 appearances for the Spanish side before his move to Barcelona. New signing Max Wöber would be able to fill in at left-back for the Yorkshire side.
