Enzo Fernández signs for Chelsea

Enzo Fernández has finalised his highly-anticipated move to Chelsea, after passing a medical exam this evening in Lisbon. The 22-year-old has attracted a British record transfer fee, with the move costing Chelsea in excess of £105m. Both clubs reached an agreement on the structure of the deal at around 9pm UK time on Deadline Day.

Fernández was cast into centre stage at the World Cup, with his excellent performances propelling Argentina to their third title in Qatar. Despite interest from Liverpool, Chelsea have always been in pole position to sign the midfielder – though few would have anticipated the club leaving it so late to get the deal done.

The signing brings Chelsea’s total sending since Todd Boehly’s arrival to a whopping £540m – £290m of which has come in the last month. The club will no doubt come under fire for their excessive spending and questionable acquisitions, but this deal looks to really strengthen the midfield – especially considering Jorginho’s Deadline Day departure to Arsenal.
