Manchester City dealt blow in title race with striker set to miss out on the run-in

Manchester City have been dealt a serious blow in their pursuit of the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League title, with Khadija Shaw set for a spell on the sidelines after limping off during the club’s 5-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.

Shaw, 27, is the league’s top scorer this season and has bagged 21 goals from 18 appearances, but was helped off the pitch at half-time on the weekend after jarring her foot in an attempt to slam home a rebounded effort.

The Jamaican international had already netted twice against the Hammers, handing the hosts a three-goal cushion at the interval at Joie Stadium. She did not return to the pitch for the second half, instead donning a protective boot as she took her place on the bench.

The Cityzens have three games remaining, including a trip to Bristol City this weekend. While Gareth Taylor’s side may be able to see off the Robins with relative ease, next weekend’s home clash against Arsenal will be a different story – and Aston Villa are capable of springing an upset on the final day of the season.

Manchester City are currently three points clear at the top of the WSL table and boast a superior goal difference compared to second-place Chelsea, although the Blues still have a game in hand to play.
